Fashion winners and sinners: Show-stoppers at India International Jewellery Week 2012 a mixed bag of stunners and bummers

The bevy of beauty queens and Bollywood goddesses that took to the ramp at the India International Jewellery Week (IIJW) 2012 admittedly lent a generous dose of glimmer to the sparklers on display.
But at the same time, the event also served to prove that one needs more than just a famous show-stopper for the designs to leave an impression.

We take a look at the glamorous women who played show-stoppers at the glittering IIJW that concluded on Thursday - some of them drop-dead gorgeous, others dismally way off the mark.

Sushmita Sen

Walking the runway for Birdhichand Ghanshyamdas, the former Miss Universe looked stunning in a black high-slit skirt, with the motif necklace from the designer's Aranya collection complementing her to the tee.

Juhi Chawla

The charming actor was the show-stopper for Kays Jewels. While the jewellery itself was striking, it looked dull paired with the boring black lehenga.

Sonali Bendre

The female equivalent of fine wine, the 37-year-old displayed jewellery for Laksh Pahuja and Anand Shah, looking gorgeous in a black gown paired with a vibrant necklace and cuff.

Neha Dhupia

Closing the show for Gitanjali Jewels, Dhupia sashayed down the runway in a Nishka Lulla creation paired with strings of polki. Her minimal look was refreshing.

Bipasha Basu

Wearing a black and gold lehenga, Bipasha took to the ramp for Nakshatra by Gitanjali. The over-dramatic make-up and diamond jewellery were a complete let-down.

Yami Gautam

Making her runway debut for D. Navinchandra, Yami didn't look particularly striking, thanks to the ill-fitted black and pink lehenga and the tacky floral jewellery.

Kate Middleton replaces Lady Gaga as highest-ranking fashion buzzword

The new queen of style: Kate Middleton replaces Lady Gaga as highest-ranking fashion buzzword

Her elegant, refined style has already sparked copycat imitations the world over. So it is little surprise that Kate Middleton's name has been revealed as the top fashion buzzword of the past year.
She replaces Lady Gaga, whose controversial and attention-seeking red carpet looks could not be more different.

The statistics were revealed yesterday in a new survey by The Global Language Monitor, which analyses word usage trends around the world.

It revealed how the future princess now reigns over its annual list of top fashion buzzwords, which features top style topics and trends. The Paparazzi singer rocketed to the top of the last year's list thanks to her penchant for ripped fishnets, revealing leotards, colourful hairpieces and a string of outrageous, barely-there stage costumes.

But even her controversial meat dress, worn at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, wasn't enough to cement the star's title at the top for a second year when compared to Miss Middleton's more refined fashion sense, suggesting a drastic change in taste among the image-concious.

The 29-year-old has been thrust into the fashion spotlight since the announcement of her engagement to the Prince of Wales back in November. Copies of the royal blue Issa dress she wore that day flew out of stores, selling out in a mere 24 hours.
And her endorsement of British labels such as Temperley London, Reiss and the little-known Libelula have already benefited from her support.

Interest in Ms. Middleton's fashion choices is only heating up as her April 29 royal wedding to the British prince approaches.

Speculation over who will design the gown, and what is will look like is rife in the fashion world, as we await her walk down the aisle.

But the ladies aren't the only ones big buzzwords for the moment - 'Sheer', the trend for translucent fabrics, trail the fashion icons at third place.

It's followed by 'shirt dresses' and 'sustainable style', a growing trend of clothing made of recycled fabrics, which trail at four and five, respectively.

Global Language Monitor's list comes just in time for the February, 10 launch of New York fashion week, which kicks off an international calendar of shows that includes London, Milan and Paris, a string of high-fashion events which will no doubt set new trends around the world.

The words in the Global Language Monitor survey were chosen from the world fashion media, nominated by key fashionistas from around the world and tracked for their frequency and usage in English-speaking media outlets worldwide.

Sonam Kapoor's 9 yards of glory in Paris

Whatever Sonam Kapoor wears grabs as much headline with desi fashionistas as Lady Gaga does internationally. The young actress attended the Elie Saab couture show during Paris Fashion week on Wednesday followed by a private dinner with the designer.

Sonam lived up to her status of a fashion icon, looking picture perfect in her powder-pink net sari with an intricate white border. She teamed the Deepti Pruthi sari with a white halter blouse that had collar detailing. The stylista kept her accessories simple- pearl hoop earrings, a pearl ring and an elegant clutch.

Sonam glamourised the look with smoky eyes, hot pink lips and tied back hair in a bun.

If Frieda Pinto is India's answer to Hollywood then Sonam Kapoor may very well be India's answer to international fashion, with magazines such as The New York Times Style Magazine stating: "Elie Saab's haute couture show, presented in the Grand Palais to an audience of Bollywood stars (Sonam Kapoor, looking gorgeous in kohl- lined eyes and a pale pink jewelled sari), Oscar hopefuls (Berenice Bejo) and clients from all the global wealthy pockets" ensures that all eyes back home and abroad are firmly fixed on the young star.

Sonam completed her look with a peach Elie Saab long sleeved lace shrug that complimented her ensemble.

She is not the first actress to don an Elie Saab, even international icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan chose to wear an Elie Saab dress with a similar shrug from the designers Spring 2011 collection when she attended the Prix de Diane Longines at Hippodrome de Chantilly in France in June last year, just before she announced her pregnancy.
